Birthday Celebration for Stuffee!
By Beth Muselwhite
May 11th will be full of excitement around Grenada Elementary School as the students in kindergarten through third grade celebrate Stuffee’s birthday! Stuffee is the mascot for The Kidzeum, the children’s museum at GES. Stuffee is an over-sized stuffed medical doll that is used to share information about our bodies and how they work. Teachers and students invite Stuffee to their classrooms as they study the digestive system, the circulatory system, and the respiratory system. The Kidzeum teachers also use Stuffee to teach children about healthy foods.
In 1994, former Kidzeum Director Eloise Portera arranged for Stuffee to be flown by helicopter to the Grenada High School stadium to become the mascot for The Kidzeum. At that time the Governor of Mississippi Kirk Fordice was invited to introduce Stuffee to his new friends attending the Grenada Elementary School. Stuffee became the official mascot, as the new Grenada Elementary School was completed and The Kidzeum was opened.
In honor of Stuffee’s birthday, the children at GES will have the pleasure and opportunity to see different guests from around the Grenada School District. Grenada Superintendent Dr. David Daigneault will present Stuffee a diploma for graduation. Students from the Grenada Middle School Show Choir, The ENTERTAINERS will perform and Grenada High School baseball players and Grenada High School cheerleaders will attend the event to celebrate Stuffee’s birthday with the K-3 students.
Each classroom will sing “Happy Birthday” and celebrate as they complete their lunch in the cafeteria. The cafeteria ladies will prepare birthday cake for each student topped with a traditional birthday blue icing representing Stuffee’s blue hair. The Kidzeum will serve a piece of Stuffee’s birthday cake to each teacher and present all classes with a special birthday party favor. The party favor for Stuffee’s birthday will be a bottle of bubbles that represents the last exhibit for this school year in The Kidzeum. All children and teachers are invited to wear a Kidzeum t-shirt on May 11th for Stuffee’s birthday.
