Kindergarten and first grade students at Grenada Elementary School are enjoying recently delivered playground equipment purchased through the PTA cookie dough fundraiser. This year’s PTA president Terry Lane pointed out, “Everyone had input into this project, from teachers and parents to students.”

After receiving feedback about what students wanted and what teachers thought was best for safety and physical activity, a company in Columbus, Mississippi, was commissioned to design the new playground. It includes swings, various types of slides, an observation bubble, a street sign memory game, bridges and ramps, a climbing wall, and ball toss.

Landscaping was also added to optimize the space for the new playground, which included barriers that contain mulch. Kindergarten teacher Leigh Vance described the benefits of the new equipment, “I love the new equipment because the children have more space to play, which prevents accidents. The equipment has a wonderful variety of activities for the children. It was much needed, and we are very grateful to our PTA and its officers.”

Kindergarten teacher Dawn Walls said, “The ball tosses are very effective for building hand-eye coordination, an important aspect of development at this age.”

The PTA president, Terry Lane, who led the project, described the teamwork necessary to make this project happen, “This is the perfect example of teachers, students, parents, and the community working together to make improvements that will directly benefit the children of Grenada Elementary School.”
