GHS Ninth Graders Plan for College
By Stephanie Raper
The furthest thing from most high school freshmen’s minds is preparing for college, right? When most freshmen enter high school, they think that they have plenty of time to raise their GPA, take the ACT, choose a college, and decide on a major. Four years seems like an eternity, but in reality, it’s a very short time period to make decisions that will affect the rest of a student’s life.
The Grenada High School 9th Grade Transitional School is working to change this misconception and impress upon students the importance of planning for the future.
Mr. Charles Washington, 9th Grade Principal, and Katie Jones, 9th Grade Counselor at GHS, are collaborating with the 9th Grade Transitional School to motivate and encourage GHS freshmen to start planning for college sooner rather than later. One step in the program provides students the opportunity to tour college campuses and get a taste of college life. Hopefully, this peek at the future will encourage students to work hard, stay in school, and choose a college and career that will lead to lifelong success.
Fifty GHS freshmen recently toured Northwest Community College in Senatobia with Washington and Jones. Students enjoyed a walking tour of the campus, visited a dorm room and a few classrooms, and ate lunch in the college cafeteria. They also visited the campus bookstore and watched the Northwest basketball team practice. Kim Perkins, an NWCC recruiter, hosted the tour of campus and spoke to students about the different programs and scholarships available to Mississippi students at the college.
The freshmen who enjoyed being “College Students for a Day” included: Kushun Rounds, Mason Tillman, Hannah Sturgeon, Sydney Huddleston, Althia Topps, Carson Carrithers, Mary Mixon, Ahmad Brexton, Jaylon Towsend, Aaliyah Golliday, Marquisha Wilks, Keavrious Harges, Kiandra Kendrink, Mahogany Moss, Ariana Bledsoe, Myesha Harvey, Courtney Mack, Larriuna Rice, Rashundra Riley, Africa Strickland, Dylisa Robinson, Angelique Brown, Ty Johnson, Kaesey Dogan, Zamiya Davis, Kristian Alexander, Ambra Bolden, Deonta Scurlock, Tyrus Black, Gabriel Lewis, Frederick Skinner, Jasmine Williams, Courtney Bell, Samuel James, Paul Ferguson, Devarious Wilburn, Keenen Thompson, Pierre Mumon, Hansen Bennett, Jeremy Buckner, Danielle Mitchell, Allyn Flautt, Carly Upchurch, Melissa Sones, Jordan Lea, Rahneisha Bledsoe, Tori Montgomery, Nick Conley, Emily Holley, and Sloane Reid.
Other tours and opportunities are planned for the 9th Grade Transitional School program. This program, along with the faculty and staff at GHS, is making the connection to our freshmen that hard work in high school leads to college and lifelong success.
