Robotics Competition

On January 28th the rookie robotics team, Pure Imagination, from Grenada Middle/High School competed in their first regional qualifier tournament. Twelve teams from around the region faced off with robots they personally designed and built. This tournament didn't involve robots fighting to the death, but instead consisted of teams working together to amass more points than the opposing teams. Each round is played with a partner robot, with three members from each team at the controls.

After a long morning of competition, Pure Imagination was ranked 6th going into the semi-final round. Paired in an alliance team with "Wait For It" from Pearl, Mississippi, the group managed to secure a place in the final round. Fighting their way through the final 3 matches, the Grenada and Pearl alliance competed against the opposing team consisting of the BentonBots and the Technocats.

After a hard-fought competition, the alliance encountered defeat in the final round. Securing a spot in the finals during their first-ever competition speaks volumes of the work and dedication put in by the Pure Imagination team members. The team received a finalist alliance trophy, was awarded a third place Inspire award (one of the most coveted awards of the competition – even more than first place), and also captured the Think Award.

Bringing home these awards qualified the Grenada School District team to compete in the First Tech Challenge State Championship at the University of Mississippi. Only 24 teams from the state qualified for a slot in the State Championships. From the championship round, only three teams will advance to the Super Regional Competition in Athens, Georgia. Good luck to this talented, young group of intellectuals!

Pure Imagination would like to thank all of the local businesses and individuals that have supported the team during their rookie year. Team members include eighth graders Shelby Boyette (team captain), Presley Hale, Kimhong Kangheng, Mason Pettit, Marlie Sturgis, and Shannon Turner; Grenada High School members are Tristan Peacock and Lance Easley. Ezzard Beane acts as the team's mentor, while Ryan Melton serves as the team's coach.
