NNDCC Spring Awards
The Grenada High School NNDCC (Navy National Defense Cadet Corps) showed its strength recently as cadets brought home several awards from both regional and state-wide competition. The cadets train hard each day, both during and after school, in order to perform at their best during physical training meets and drill meets. Under the leadership of Chief Reese Foreman, the GHS chapter has done extremely well this year in competition.
On April 2, 2015, and April 16, 2016 , the GHS cadets traveled to Oxford to compete at the Lafayette Invitational Drill Meet and North Mississippi Regional JROTC Athletic Competition. Other teams participating in the event included Lafayette, Greenwood, Rosa Fort, South Panola, Olive Branch, Horn Lake, Lake Cormorant, Ripley, Pine Bluff and Oxford.
Since this was the first Air Force Meet for the GHS Cadets, they had to learn Air Force drill cards in order to participate. While competing, cadets perform physical training moves specific to the branch of armed forces sponsoring the meet. The drill cards list the individual moves and the branch-specific names for each. The GHS cadets’ previous meets have all used Navy drill cards. During the Lafayette Invitational, the GHS team won one trophy and twelve medals. Dallin Foreman and Chance Wortham placed third in Two-Man Tandem, and the Unarmed Exhibition team won third place.
After the Lafayette Invitational Drill Meet, ten cadets competed in the North Mississippi Regional JROTC Athletic Competition. Events were 10x100 Relay, Ammo-Can Carry (ammo can filled with sand), Curl-Up (sit-ups), Litter Carry, One Mile Run, and Pull-Ups for males and Flex-Arm Hang for females. The competition was intense, but GHS cadets managed to win third place out of nine schools, qualifying for state finals which were held April 16. The cadets placed in the top three in two events - first place in the 10x100 Relay and third place in Ammo Cans. They also brought home fourth place overall out of approximately 85 JROTC schools. The cadets competed against the following schools: Natchez, Oxford, Wilkinson County, Biloxi, Neshoba Central, West Point, Olive Branch, Yazoo County, Callaway, Germantown, Florence, Moss Point, Gulfport, Franklin County, Lake Cormorant, and St. Martin for the State All-Services JROTC Athletic Championship Meet.
In the state the cadets finished 15th overall last year. The cadets are proud of their accomplishments for the year and have already begun training for next year’s slate of competition! Congratulations to all of these cadets for the hard work and dedication they have shown this year. Your hard work has paid off and you brought home the proof of your efforts! Keep up the good work!
