Homecoming Festivities PlannedWhile the temperatures don’t feel much like fall, Grenada High School’s “Boys of Fall” (the football players) will take to the field Friday night in the ritual of Homecoming. This age-old tradition allows old friends and new to gather and enjoy the camaraderie and competition that only football in the South can offer. We all know that high school football is THE game of the season, and Homecoming is the biggest game of them all.
Homecoming activities began yesterday as Grenada High School students enjoyed a tailgate breakfast provided by parents. Each year, numerous parents are recruited to bring sausage and biscuits for the entire school. Students, teachers, and parents enjoy the opportunity to experience the tailgating spirit of Homecoming on the high school level. Thanks to all who had a hand in providing this event for GHS.
Other events are scheduled this week as well including Homecoming practice today and Wednesday. Homecoming maids and escorts, the GHS band, and members of the GHS NJROTC all take part in the pageantry of the Homecoming ceremony. This year’s Homecoming maids are: Seniors – Ashley Hatch, Ashley Kellum, Kayla Woodson, and Grace Worthy; Juniors – Allyn Flautt, Althia Topps; Sophomores – Joniyah Campbell, Alex Ferguson; Freshmen – Madison Martin, Lyric Watt. These young ladies were nominated and elected by the student body. They will be escorted by their fathers or a male relative during the ceremony. Make sure to attend Homecoming to see which senior maid will be crowned GHS Homecoming Queen!
On Thursday, the exciting Charger Olympics will take place in the GHS gym. Six-member teams from each class (seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen) and a teacher team will compete in wacky games for the honor of being named Charger Olympic Champions. Winning teams will be awarded gold, silver, or bronze horseshoe medals in the spirit of the Olympic Games
Each day during Homecoming week GHS students enjoy a “dress-up” day where they wear themed costumes. This year the themes include:
- Wednesday – College or Pro Sports Jersey Day. Students wear t-shirts or jerseys depicting their favorite team along with regular dress code pants, shorts, or skirts.
- Thursday – Character Day – Students dress in costumes as their favorite character from cartoons, literature, etc. Students participating on this day must wear a full costume of their character – no t-shirts that only display a likeness of the character. Costumes may not be shorter than two inches above the knee. No strapless, low-cut, or midriff exposing tops.
- Friday – Spirit Day (GHS t-shirts), Senior Toga Day. Grenada School District t-shirts may be worn with regular dress code pants, shorts, or skirts. Seniors may wear the traditional toga with GSD t-shirt and regular dress code pants, shorts, or skirt underneath.
