2016 Class Elections

Elections seem to be the main topic of conversation in the news these days, especially the Presidential election. However, at Grenada High School, the Who’s Who elections have topped the list! Each year, students at GHS nominate members of the student body that they feel most represent the Who’s Who categories. These categories, chosen by the Annual Staff members, change each year based on the theme of the current yearbook. The English teachers play a big role in the nomination and election process as they are the only teachers that see every student in the school at some point during the day. Because of this important fact, they get the dubious honor of conducting the actual nominations and subsequent elections. Thanks to you English teachers! Without you, the elections would not be possible.

The nomination and election process is no small task. English teachers receive instructions and conduct nominations in class, then send the results back to the Annual Staff. Staff members take the nominations, organize them, type up an alphabetized list of names, and send to the counselors and administration for approval. Candidates must meet criteria set forth in the student handbook to qualify for the election. After the list is approved, the staff members type up official ballots for each category and send back to the English teachers. Teachers then have students vote in class and return the ballots for counting. Any ties are sent back for a run off. This year, the school experienced its first online runoff vote as freshmen voted to break a tie on computers in their Keystone class. Students chose one name from a list and votes were tallied automatically by computer. Technology is amazing; this was a great timesaver!
