Long-time Business Manager Retires
Bo Surrell has been an integral part of the Grenada School District for 27 years. Hired by Dr. Buddy Pender in August of 1986, Surrels worked diligently as the General Business Manager of the Grenada School District until his retirement this past December. Surrell, a 1983 graduate of Millsaps, holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and Accounting. Prior to working for GSD, Surrell worked for the Mississippi State Auditor’s Office from 1983 – 1986.
While employed by the Grenada School District, Surrell served as Chief Financial Officer, oversaw the budget for the entire district, and also prepared the budget for approval by both the Board of Directors and the State Auditor’s department. Surrell was also responsible for presenting the budget for audit to the State Auditor’s department each year. He is exceptionally proud of the fact that while he served as CFO, the district received unqualified audit opinions each year. This is the highest level of audit that can be awarded to a school district. The Grenada School District has received no audit comments for many years under Surrell’s leadership – a great accomplishment!
While employed by the district, Surrell also served as both the President and Vice President of the Mississippi Association of School Business Officials. He also served on the Mississippi School Board Association Workers Compensation Program. Surrell was also involved in the creation of several legislative changes for school accounting services during his tenure with GSD.
Surrell credits much of his success at the Grenada School District to the superb staff he has worked with during the duration of his employment. He stated, “In my opinion, the Grenada School District is one of the best school districts overall. Our teachers and administrators are top-rate, and both superintendents I have worked with have been exceptional. I worked with Dr. Pender for 20 years and with Dr. Daigneault for 7 years. I could not have asked for more accommodating employers. The accounting and financial staff I worked with in Grenada have enabled me to enjoy a long and successful career for which I am thankful.”
Surrell is married to Susan Surrell. The couple has three sons that are also employed in the education field. Matt is the Director of Business Services at Holmes Community College, Kelby works at Grenada High School as a teacher, and Cole is employed as Assistant Principal in the Winona School District. Surrell is grandfather to four grandchildren: Paxton, Mary Ashton, Kasen, and Aubrey Cole. Surrell's future plans include assisting his wife Susan in the expansion and enhancement of her Mary Kay Cosmetics business.
The Grenada School District would like to thank Bo Surrell for his years of service and wish him the best in his future endeavors.
