STAR Student and STAR Teacher Selected
Grenada High School Senior Anna Hayward has been named as a STAR (Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition) Student for the 2016 – 2017 school year by the Mississippi Economic Council's M.B. Swayze Foundation, sponsor of the STAR program. STAR Students are seniors with the highest ACT scores and scholastic averages in their high schools. They are chosen from more than 300 public, private, and parochial schools each year.
Hayward, the daughter of Bob and Pam Hayward, was honored during the STAR Program at the annual Education Celebration on April 27, 2017, at the Jackson Convention Center in downtown Jackson. Anna has been a member of the GHS Annual Staff since her sophomore year and has served as editor during her junior and senior years. She is the president of both the National Honor Society and the French Club. Anna also serves as the vice-president of the Excel Club and the secretary of the Key Club. Furthermore, she participates actively in the GHS Anchor Club. Anna is a proud AP student and attends the Superintendent's Breakfast each year. After graduation, she plans to participate in the early-entry Pharmacy program at the University of Mississippi.
As part of the STAR Program, each STAR Student is asked to name the teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student's scholastic achievement. I was so honored (and totally surprised) when Anna named me as her STAR Teacher! Watching Anna develop into the incredible young woman she is today has been my honor for the past four years. Her undeniable intelligence is outshone only by the drive, determination, and leadership skills she has honed while at GHS. As an annual staff member, Anna made herself indispensable; I will miss her terribly after graduation. I know that she will achieve extraordinary accomplishments as she aspires to reach her goals. Being chosen as STAR Teacher is one of the ultimate accolades an educator can receive. The honor is especially meaningful to me because my mother was previously named as a STAR Teacher, and my daughter was named STAR Student at GHS during her senior year. Thank you, Anna, for choosing me; follow your dreams and live your life to the fullest!"
Over 500 STAR Students and STAR Teachers received recognition from MEC's Swayze Foundation at the Education Celebration. The top 20 STAR Students – ALL-STAR Scholars – and their STAR Teachers were presented scholarship awards provided by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation. The highlight of the Education Celebration was the naming of the Mississippi ALL-STAR Student for the 2016-2017 school year, winner of the coveted $24,000 Cook Foundation scholarship and teacher awards.
