Culinary Team Wins Jr. Chef Competition

Culinary Team

FIRED UP ABOUT COOKING

Members of Grenada Career and Technical Center's Culinary Arts classes cooked up some winning cuisine recently during the second annual Jr. Chef Competition. Sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Education/Office of Child Nutrition, "Savor the Flavor of Mississippi" is a statewide high school-level cooking competition that allows students to compete against other Mississippi teams in regional and state events.

During the contest, students prepare and present original, nutritious, and student-friendly recipes to a panel of judges.

This year's regional competition takes place across the state during the month of October. The GHS team hosted the North Mississippi regional event this past week in the newly renovated culinary arts kitchen at the Grenada Career and Technical Center. Four teams competed in the affair, two teams from Desoto County, one from Louisville, and the GCTC team. The Central Mississippi and South Mississippi regional competitions take place later this month. Teams submitted recipes for the event prior to the actual competition in order for the nutritional value of the recipe to be determined.

Each recipe must meet the National School Lunch Program menu guidelines as well as the following:
• Must use at least two "MS Goods" (ingredients provided by local MS Farmers that have been documented by the team)
• Must yield at least six servings

Guidelines for teams are:
• Each team must have a spokesperson
• Each team must have between 2-4 students (one alternate is allowed)
• Each school may have no more than two teams
• High School teams may include students in grades 9-12
• Each team must have a Culinary Arts Instructor/Coach present for the entire competition
• Only students are allowed to cook. Instructor/Coach may provide only hands-off guidance
The GCTC team, "All Fired Up" utilized their culinary skills to amaze the taste buds of the judges and and win the North Mississippi regional event! The winning dish created by the team included an Italian stuffed chicken breast, heart healthy salad, and sweet potato skillet. Members of "All Fired Up" include Aaliyah Harbin, Shakaiya Robinson, Jaylen Perkins-Smoot, and Ashton Whitfield. The team, competing for the first time this year, is coached by Culinary Arts Instructor Lindsey Kelly.

"All Fired Up", along with the winners of the other regional competitions will advance to the state level in January. State winners will compete in the Southeast Regional Competition in Louisville, Kentucky against other state winners from Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Congratulations to "All Fired Up" on their delicious victory!
