Next week, students, faculty, and administration in the Grenada School District will have many reasons to be thankful, especially the fact that they will be excused from classes for the Thanksgiving holiday! It's hard to believe that the first semester of the 2016 – 2017 school year is almost over. When students return to classes on November 28, only three weeks remain until Christmas break. However, many important events are scheduled between now and the end of the semester.
Later this week, students at Grenada Middle School and Grenada Elementary School will participate in the annual Science (GMS) and Reading (GES) fairs. Set up for the GMS Science Fair is Wednesday, November 16, from 3:15 – 5:00p.m in the GMS Gym. The fair takes place from 8:00a.m. – 3:15p.m. on Thursday, November 17. The Grenada Middle School choirs will also present a concert on Thursday in the GHS Auditorium at 6:00p.m.
GES Reading Fair participants will set up their projects in the GES Library on Thursday, November 17 from 3:00p.m. – 5:00p.m. The fair will commence at 8:00a.m. on Friday, November 18 and conclude at 12:00p.m., with awards at 1:30p.m.
After Thanksgiving break, the pace zooms to warp speed as we race through the next three weeks. On Thursday, December 1, the Symphonic Winds, Jazz I and II, and 6th grade GSD bands will perform a Christmas concert in the GHS Auditorium at 7:00p.m. GUES's Pizzazz ensemble will also perform their Christmas Showcase on this date at 8:30a.m., 12:30p.m. and 6:00p.m. in the GUES Gym. December 6, GSD 7 – 12 grade bands will march in the Grenada Christmas parade.
Grenada High School's Visions Showchoir will present its Christmas concert December 8-10, in the GHS auditorium at 7:00p.m. each night. The group will perform its school show for students Friday, December 9 in the GHS Auditorium at 8:30a.m. Also on Friday, the GES Kidzeum will host Grandparent's Day from 9:00a.m. – 12:00p.m. Grenada Middle School will present its annual Beauty Review in the GHS Auditorium on December 10 at 2:00p.m., and the GMS Choir will perform in concert in the GHS Auditorium December 13 at 6:00p.m.
Wrapping up the first semester, Nine Weeks Tests are scheduled for December 14 – 16. Each school sets its own testing schedule, so be sure to check with your child's school for exact times and dates. Following exams, students will be dismissed from classes from December 19 – January 3, 2017. Teachers will return to school on January 3 for Professional Development, while students will not return to classes until January 4, 2017.
There's a tremendous amount of activity packed into the next few weeks in the Grenada School District. We are thankful that our district has the ability to offer so many opportunities for our students. Make plans to support the great events scheduled between now and the beginning of the new year at your child's school.
