Winona City and Montgomery County Schools Consolidation to Impact Some GSD Students

Due to a state Legislature mandate, Montgomery County students attending GSD through the "30 Mile Rule" will no longer be able to attend GSD unless released by the new Winona Montgomery Consolidated School District's Board of Education. This situation is due to the consolidation of Winona City Schools and Montgomery County Schools.

The "30 Mile Rule" states that students will not be transported over 30 miles to school. The new Winona Montgomery Consolidated School District (WMCSD) has closed the Kilmichael Schools, therefore invalidating the 30 Mile Rule for current GSD students residing in Montgomery County.

Students who reside in Montgomery County will be required to attend schools in WMCSD unless newly released. Releases previously granted by the former Montgomery County School District will not be valid after June 30, 2018.

New releases from WMCSD will be considered for the following exceptions: 1. Students classified as seniors for the 2018-19 school year will be released if the parent/guardian petitions the WMCSD board of trustees. If petitioned, the Board will also release any sibling residing in the same household as a senior petitioning release. 2. Children of GSD employees will be released upon petition of the WMCSD board of trustees.

Parents requesting release from WMCSD should petition the board of trustees in writing. Should any parent/guardian wish to attend, the next WMCSD board meeting is July 10.

WMCSD registration for the 2018-19 school year is July 18 & 19, 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.
