AmeriCorps Serves Grenada Schools and Community

The Grenada AmeriCorps Program continues to make a difference within the Grenada School District and the Grenada community. Twenty-eight AmeriCorps members are assisting children, grades kindergarten through the eighth grade, through quality tutoring in math and reading skills. In addition to this service, AmeriCorps members also participate in community events and serve in a wide variety of endeavors.  For example, AmeriCorps members have provided service and smiles to patrons of the Grenada Food Pantry and strengthened our community by serving at various area events, such as Grenada Downtown Jubilee. During the Jubilee, AmeriCorps members emphasized the importance of reading by constructing, planning, and performing in a puppet show for children and served in other capacities to make the day more enjoyable for Grenada. Throughout our community, AmeriCorps members are getting things done!

Our recent 9/11 National Day of Service, held on Sunday, September 11th, was a great success! Many people participated in the AmeriCorps of Grenada-sponsored Day of Remembrance at the Grenada Medical Complex. It was inspiring to see residents of our community, dressed in either red, white, or blue, standing shoulder to shoulder, forming a human American flag and singing patriotic songs to memorialize the 2,740 Americans who died as a result of terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Our annual Make a Difference Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd. Members of AmeriCorps of Grenada are pleased to contribute to our area and are looking forward to providing service that will truly make a difference in the lives of those within our community.

AmeriCorps [pronounced- amer-a-core] of Grenada is proud to serve you. Our AmeriCorps members have committed to serve both the Grenada School District and our community. Members were recently sworn in by the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service, taking an oath of service. Our pledge keeps us on track of our goals and also conveys our dedication to our community:

I will get things done for America to make our people safer, smarter, and healthier.

I will bring Americans together to strengthen our communities.

Faced with apathy, I will take action.

Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground.

Faced with adversity, I will persevere.

I will carry this commitment with me this year and beyond.

I am an AmeriCorps member, and I will get things done.
